On the eve of the World Cup I am reminded of my time in Sao Paulo, Brasil.
A friend of mine is taking me to visit El Estádio Cícero Pompeu de Toledo which is home to São Paulo Futebol Clube.
As we tour the stadium he enlightens me with the fact that volleyball is the most popular sport in Brasil. “What about football I ask?” to which he replies, “Football is a religion.”
Who would dare show contempt or a lack of reverence to religious things, or towards something considered sacred or inviolable. Who would silence a crowd of 200,000 and make a country change its colours?
Alcides Edgardo Ghiggia did!
