Last week years 4, 5 and 6 went to the Great Aussie Bush Camp at Kincumber. Everything about the camp was fantastic, even the weather. The children had the opportunity to participate in a variety of day time activities such as Canoeing, High Ropes, Giant Swing (three person), Power Fan, Rock Climbing, Lost – Mud World (an obstacle course through lots and lots of mud), Raft Building (racing and sinking!) and Survivor Challenge. At night, the activities were just as engaging and challenging. On the first night the students participated in a County Fair and on the second night there was a Commando Challenge – Children vs Teachers/Coaches/Laura. The entire experience was just so much fun.
The students were each challenged in the activities to try something new or go just that little bit further. They were encouraged to push beyond their comfort zones and take it to the next level. It was amazing to see them in this environment. At college, the coaches talk to their training groups all the time about their mindset, and the difference between a closed mindset and a growth mindset. We got to see this in action, and not just on one occasion. All we asked was that each student approached each activity with an open mind, set a goal of what they would like to personally achieve and then go for it with fearless abandon.
What I personally witnessed in students through the camp was bravery, commitment, leadership, compassion and empathy, encouragement, peer support and comradeship. I was so proud of all of the students, as were the other teachers and coaches who attended.
