One and a half weeks into a nine week term and the pace is already picking up. The projects are in full swing and the response from the students has been fantastic. This term our stage 5 topic is focused on popular culture and the driving question is ‘Are teenagers misunderstood?’ This has already provoked debate within the open learning space.
These first two weeks have seen the introduction of PDHPE and students have had the opportunity to work both individually and as part of a small team to produce some interesting views on the delicate issues of mental health, drugs and alcohol. They are in the final task phase, developing a short advertisement about one of the topic areas.
I had the opportunity to sit with many of the year 10 students today and talk to them about their holidays and how they felt their work and football were going. I was delighted that all the students I spoke with were incredibly happy and positive about this term. They were excited about the projects and the way they had been presented to them. They were focused on their tasks, felt a sense of achievement knowing they had met deadlines and were encouraged by the positive feedback they were receiving. The buzz is back in stage 5 this term and it feels like bundles of motivation and determination flowing through the door. This is not only encouraging, but infectious and makes for a more positive working environment for all.
