As we come to the end of term, I know I am, and many students are, exhausted. It has been a full-on first term, especially for some. With that in mind, it is important to remember not everyday will be a great day. Some days will suck. Although we aim for everyday to be a great day for all, it’s not uncommon for students to have an off day. That doesn’t mean they haven’t learned anything or that they have been in trouble, but just some days don’t go as planned. For some students there may have been dramas at home, with friends or they just aren’t “feeling it”.
It’s OK to have these days, what is important is before going to sleep, to reflect on the day. Maybe even keep a journal to jot down thoughts. This reflection process might include thinking about why the day wasn’t the best, and, in particular, what could have been done to make the day better. It may also include a list of things that were good about the day and to be grateful for. Even when we are having off days it is important to be thankful and grateful for what we do have.
Today at IFS we had a visit from a motivational speaker, David Galea, who suffers from MS. He spoke about the importance of having a positive attitude and not letting those bad days get the better of us. Personally, I believe there is nothing wrong with having a bad day, week or even month, but we need to come out of it with something we have learned or gained and be thankful for what we have.
