WARNING – THIS BLOG CONTAINS A VIDEO LINK CONTAINING STRONG LANGUAGE AND IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN UNDER 15
I’m writing this blog on something very close to me and that’s anxiety in children.
I would like to show you two videos. This first is on Child Anxiety. The second, called The Mask You Live In, explores how society is failing boys in how it presents masculinity.
For me it is vitally important to give children safe ways to release and explore their emotions. This is particularly true for boys who try to hide anger and frustration which is linked to depression, anxiety and poor behaviour control.
I have been talking previously about children making mistakes and how we embrace them through the making of mistakes. Some children, though, suffer when making mistakes and then feel vulnerable and experience frustration when learning a new skill.
For me as a coach and father of three boys, I feel children need to be encouraged to be aware of emotions, be able to name them and be given support to release/deal effectively with them. As you’ll see in the second video, it is particularly damaging the way we raise boys to ‘be a man’, ‘boys are tough’, ‘men don’t cry’.
I apologise for the second video as it does contain explicit language inappropriate for younger viewers.
