ITS welcomes Matt Toohey as our Strength and Conditioning and Functional Movement Coach
The first thing I think about in regards to the excitement I feel towards my new role at the college, is how awesome it would have been to have had the opportunity to attend a college like this when I was younger. My name is Matthew Toohey, and I feel privileged to introduce myself to everyone as a new member of the team. I have begun on a casual basis with the tennis program in conjunction with head coach Greg Brownlow to look after the fitness, speed, warm ups, movement skills training and injury prevention.
The first few weeks will be spent testing and screening our players to develop an athletic profile to determine where they currently stand in the athletic development process. This provides us with direction that will dictate where we take the program and enable us to track progress long term.
I have always enjoyed the science and challenge of coaching any sport. My first coaching job was two years with an under six football team when I was just 14. My first paid job was working as a tennis coach. I did this for several years before progressing to a strength and conditioning coach role with the Junior High Performance Unit at the Newcastle Knights rugby league club, looking after players from age 14-19. I’m currently working as the High Performance Director at the Wyong Roos NSW Cup rugby league team.
In conjunction with my previous coaching work experience in multiple sports, I’ve studied a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of Newcastle and have a Masters in Exercise Science (Strength and Conditioning).
I am excited about the opportunity to work with developing young athletes and watching then progress along what will hopefully be a smooth pathway.
Enjoy the opportunity, I will be.
Matthew Toohey

This is fantastic for the college, and will be of immense benefit to our kids, looking forward to seeing the results and feedback from my son 🙂 Well done IFS!
