As part of our weekly routine, years 3, 4, 5 and 6 spend Friday afternoon teaching sessions together.
This is a great time for our primary students to get to know each other and learn to work collaboratively. Each session begins with a brief primary assembly where messages, announcements and expectations are conveyed to the students. We then move into our collaborative primary project – Funky Friday Freestyling. The driving question for this project is: How cool am I?
Students have been placed into groups of four, with most groups including one student from each grade. The students have had to identify the football and tennis skills represented within their group. Using this skill list as a foundation, the groups collaborate about the freestyling tricks they would like to showcase and how they intend to sequence them together. The focus is on taking the tricks they already know and developing them further. There will be time to practise, refine and practise some more before putting together final presentations in the form of film clips, created on iPads using iMovie. This project will take us well into term two when we’ll finish with a Funky Friday Freestyling Movie Marathon – because all great movies deserve an audience. Stayed tuned for viewing times.
On a final note, we always finish off our session with a couple of games. One of these games is called Scissors, Paper, Rock, Snake. I’m not going to explain the rules, I’m absolutely certain your children will be able to explain it to you, but honestly, who knew the very simple game of Scissors, Paper, Rock could be so fun!
