Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer amount women worldwide. This year, 14,940 women in Australia are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer, with that number increasing to 17,210 in 2020. On average, about 47 women every day will hear the words “you have breast cancer”.
A few weeks ago some IFS students spent some time at Blue Tongue Stadium picking up plastic bottles after a Mariners game. Earning 10c for each bottle, they raised $83. They decided to donate this to breast cancer, and their fundraising effort did not stop there!
Some of the girls had approached me a few weeks earlier asking if they could all do something together. They wanted to share an experience to build a stronger bond between themselves. After much brainstorming and discussion it was agreed to bake cup cakes at college and sell them to the students. Last Wednesday Laura and I spent the afternoon with the girls, rocking out to music and baking cakes in the cafe. Bec joined us after college to help decorate them and test that they tasted ok!
The girls didn’t stop there, they were on a roll and decided to have a Wear Pink for Breast Cancer Day. All IFS students were invited to wear something pink and give a gold coin donation for the privilege. After such a fun day baking, then selling and dressing up, our combined total raised, including the plastic bottle money, was an amazing $460 which we will proudly donate to the Breast Cancer Foundation. Not only was this a great result, the best part was that all the ideas came from the students. I am so proud of their effort, their motivation and their desire to help others, it is amazing.
