I was privileged to be part of the guard of honour at the recent Mariners game against Brisbane Roar. If you were at the game you would have seen the Mariners players wearing pink, along with many in the crowd, as part of a Breast Cancer Support Night. I play for Berkeley Vale WAA 4 and one of our players is receiving treatment for breast cancer. This is her second time of being treated for it and she is still smiling! Showing our support by wearing our breast cancer ‘fight like a girl’ team shirts, it was a pretty amazing feeling being down pitch side and welcoming the players onto the field.
With the help of Lisa from Total Environmental Centre, we also arranged for students to do a plastic bottle pick up around the stadium after everyone had left. Brooke, Emily and Coen had been working hard drumming up some IFS helpers to ensure we were able to pick up as many bottles as possible. For every plastic bottle we collected the Total Environmental Centre gave us 10 cents, with the money we collected being donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation. It took us about 1.5 hours to collect 831 plastic bottles which rewarded us with a total of $83.10.
To continue our fundraising efforts, the girls at IFS are planning a cake sale and ‘Wear Pink for Breast Cancer Day’ on Thursday 7th November. Students are invited to wear pink and make a gold coin donation, and to purchase cakes at recess and lunchtime with all money raised going to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
