The sacking of Socceroos coach Holger Osieck has sent the Australian football community into a flurry of discussions about where we are at on the world stage, what are the problems and how do we fix them.
As much as I love putting forward my own amazing ideas and opinions on such topics, I find it ‘old news’ to be coming up with new reasons why Australian football has been lacking and how we should fix it. The fact is that such discussions were held at the highest levels of the game which resulted in an expert review and the birth of our National Curriculum in 2009. This has been more recently updated to a more urgent cry for the ‘Fundamental Transformation’ needed if we are to aspire to keep up with rest of world, let alone strive to be a leader of it.
Here then, in our national philosophy, lies the evidence of our current position and the solution for our future questions and concerns. I see the ‘Fundamental Transformation’ process being much like a treatment prescribed for our football ‘sickness’. The National Curriculum is our medicine. Commitment, support and education are our rehab. Time is always needed. At this point, I feel a lot of us are yet to reach the first step – acceptance.
