Well it’s been a few weeks since I put pen to paper (finger to button). Our first two weeks back have been flat out. I have four new students in my class with another two coming soon, so firstly, a big welcome to those students and I am sure everyone will make them feel extremely welcome. This got me thinking about numbers, yes I am a maths number fanatic. I love the fact that everything revolves around maths. Whether it be the number of heart beats or how fast you are going on the motorway. Nature has a very precise way of using mathematics. Did you know that your brain is actually divided into seven parts (not literally) and one of these parts is dedicated to mathematics. If it is so natural and we even have a part of brain dedicated to it, why do some children struggle with mathematical concepts. In light of this, I devised a plan to help students understand the concepts of measurement, decimals and fractions while also learning about shapes (perimeter, area etc).
The first question I asked myself was: what would I have liked to do when I was young. My answer: play with remote control cars. So I challenged myself into thinking how I could use remote control cars to teach maths. Yes, that’s right, remote control cars and maths. Let me explain. Students need to design a racing car track. Sounds easy enough but in designed their race track they need to think about distances, size of track, area of the track, time to finish the track, etc. Off they set, designing and making their tracks. As you can see it’s a work in progress and I’ll keep you posted on how it all goes.
