In the pursuit of ‘worlds’ best practice’ in the IFS football program, we are constantly looking for innovative ways to track the progress of our young footballers.
Over the past week the coaches, working closely with Matt O’Neil, have been tinkering with a testing protocol to measure the proficiency of a player in ‘striking the ball’ (or an inside of the foot pass). The test involves a series of ten passes towards a designated target, to be filmed from directly behind the target. This allows us to collate a score and also to provide video feedback alongside a ‘model’ or player who displays sound technique, to give the young player a comparison.
On Monday morning Matt approached me to trial the test. I proceeded to complete my ten passes, each one filmed by Matt. We got to the end of the test and for whatever reason, Matt wasn’t happy with something. He asked me for one more pass!
“Who was he to question my technique?” I thought.
I’ll give him one more pass!
