Last night we held our first IFS Parent – Teacher evening, an opportunity to meet and talk about individual student progress. Laura’s blog last week expressed it beautifully – the feelings of all concerned: of students, parents and teachers when it comes to writing, receiving, reading, analysing, explaining and discussing student reports.
I very much enjoyed the evening. Of course discussing an outstanding report card is easy, but when it comes to one that has comments such as “is capable of better results” or “we are still to experience their best efforts” or “if they were to better focus on the tasks at hand” etc, then the conversations are somewhat more different. It was very encouraging to experience the support of all of the parents I spoke with, and I know that this was the same for all our teachers. A big thank you to our supportive parent body for giving us your trust.
The following is quote from an American writer, Charles Swindoll, that I’ve often passed onto students with my own accompanying comment of: ‘What you make of your life will be determined by what you are prepared to put into it.’
ATTITUDE
“The longer I live, the more I realise the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude… I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our attitudes.”
I want to wish everyone at IFS a refreshing and safe term break. See you in term three, and perhaps at one of the Officeworks’ BBQs, have you signed up yet?
Warm regards,
Rodney
