“It’s not the size of the dog in a fight, it’s the size of the fight in a dog.” This quote was evident in last week’s basketball tournament in Bankstown.
Our boys had only two short, intense basketball sessions before being thrown in the deep end at a CDSSA inter college tournament. Teams present included the likes of Moriah College to a YOTS (youth off the streets) side who had all played basketball together for many months.
Being a PDHPE teacher, it’s moments like these I gain the most pride. Both the stage 4 and stage 5 teams were evidently nervous before their first matches and the 207cm tall opposition didn’t really make it look encouraging for us. Both teams never gave up, never got disheartened and never stopped trying, which led to the stage 5 team finishing third and stage 4 ending up fourth overall. This was a tremendous achievement considering they had no real match practice before the tournament.
We were by far the fittest squad of players at the event, which shows that our training is paying off on stamina and endurance levels. The boys behaved impeccably all day and represented IFS superbly.
There are a number of upcoming cross country, athletics and swimming events I am looking to enter our students in. These events not only enable students to experience a variety of physical activities but also allow us to forge relationships with other colleges, helping put IFS on the map as a dominant sporting college.
