Did you know that smooth bark eucalyptus trees (scribbly gun trees) can be used to cool you down in the hot sun?
Did you know that the heath banksia tree produces honey?
Did you know that you can make rope from the stringy bark tree?
Did you know the the red bloodwood tree has red sap that works like a bandaid?
Well these are some of the things I learned yesterday from the guides at the Australian Walkabout Park. Bec and I took the year 7 and 8 students on an excursion to the park in Calga and we couldn’t have asked for a better winter’s day to attend( freezing and wet today!)
We spent two hours on a bushwalk spotting various native flora and learning how aboriginals used them for food, medicine and tools. This aspect of the day reinforced the research we need to undertake for the development of our native garden. We are now very well informed on the types of trees we might like to include in the garden.
In the afternoon the students learned how to use leaves as soap as well as getting to touch a koala and python. Lots of fun and educational too. A big thanks to Adam and Karen our guides for the day, for passing on their knowledge and respect for the land.
We are all excited and eager to begin building our garden.
