The recent appointment of Moya Dodd as a FIFA board member and Lisa De Vanna’s spectacular overhead volley goal in the USA Women’s Pro League (google it!) prompted a deeper appreciation for my place in football history.
As a 14 year old I was able to play alongside Moya in my first open women’s club team, Sydney Olympic. Moya was finishing up her fine playing career and was a true encourager and inspirational leader for me. Now she continues that role for many on a grander scale. Congratulations Moya!
I also witnessed the revelation of Lisa De Vanna on the world stage in 2004 and her maturity in the 2007 World Cup. To be on the same pitch and see her weave her way through many a defence was an experience in itself. She is now known as one of the world’s best strikers and well deserved. She is a once-in-a-lifetime player.
I’m very grateful for my time in women’s football history. I’ve seen the game grow from ‘a boys game’ to one of the most popular team sports for girls. The only thing I wish I had experienced in my career was playing alongside our game’s biggest legend Julie Dolan. I was, however, privileged enough to receive the medal named after her, and now I am really enjoying working alongside her in this exciting football initiative that is the Central Coast Sports College. She’s a true leader, a team player and has the most important ingredient – a fantastic sense of humour. Yes, I’m grateful for my place in history.
