I love the process football teaches of becoming a team. The ‘forming, storming, norming and performing’ * stages are intriguing, as a group of individuals come together to strive towards a common goal.
What happens then, in youth development, when the aim is to improve the individual while the true essence of football is about the team succeeding? This is my challenge as a coach.
I’m really enjoying seeing my group of boys go through this process as they progress from only watching out for their individual interests, to gaining an appreciation of their role within a team game plan and helping one another succeed.
We’re becoming a team.
