We’ve just finished our project, Does Accuracy really Matter? and the team figures have been sent to the accountant to be audited. Soon we will see who came out with the biggest profit and who ended up losing money.
This week saw the start of our history project on Ancient Egypt. I am focusing on why this topic is still relevant to us in modern times. We have started with hieroglyphics – did you know there were over 700 symbols to learn back then? I think I might stick to our 26 letters of the alphabet.
Last week I had one of those teaching moments that will stick with me for some time. We are currently undertaking a freestyle football project with the children putting together a video of their skills. Before they move onto the project each afternoon, I set them a target of kickups to reach before they can begin to practise their skills. One particular student didn’t feel very confident of the goal I had set him and looked a little down. After everyone had achieved theirs, some really easily and some with a few tries, I called him over. I gave him a couple of handy hints and he began to try and try and try and try again. He kept trying for over an hour and even after college, kept trying. He was determined to get it right and every spare minute I would sit with him as he tried to achieve his target. Even during recess and lunch I would see him practising with some of his classmates encouraging him and giving their advice on how he could do it. Two days later, after another hour of practice, I was standing with him and he achieved his goal. It was the most amazing thing to see this student determined to never give up and to witness the other students’ encouragement. After all the excitement I had walked away, he came up to me, shook my hand, looked me in the eye and said,”Shane, thanks for not giving up on me“.
