We have just made our way through week one and are nearly coming to the end of week two. Where is the time going? I had a truly amazing and well deserved break but must say that it was also really good to get back to see my students smiley faces.
This Term has seen us delving into the world of decimals and fractions. I can just hear the comments now, things like boring, never understood them, why would we even use this etc. So with this in mind I have tried to make it more purposeful by making our project more real life. So the students have been given the task to discover “Is accuracy really that important?”. In order to do this we will be looking into everyday jobs/situations that use decimals and fractions.
The students have been set a fictional task of putting an event together. They are responsible for organising everything from equipment to stock to ticket sales etc. In doing this they will then need to purchase the items from our ‘shop’ that is setup in the class using their group credit cards. Their credit cards have a budget on them and they are to use that budget. They are able to spend over their budget on their credit cards but this naturally accrues interest. They will need to generate income in order to pay off their credit cards and also selling items at their event. This will introduce both decimals and fractions as they begin to use real life scenarios to learn Maths.
Will they blow out their budgets or will they be able to make a profit?
