It’s week 8 and we have been through two and a half projects with 7 end assessment tasks involving 7 different subjects, working with several different people at one time to produce a particular outcome. Add to the mix at least 5 games of college football, plus training and weekend games. What does this all equal?
Very tired students that are feeling the strain of 8 jam packed weeks.
It has become apparent over this last week how tired the students are becoming and this is having an effect on their application within the class room. It’s so very important that during these last two weeks of the term students remain focused and alert during class to ensure that they are able to complete the set projects with enthusiasm. To help them to do this they must make sure that they get to bed at a reasonable time and sleep. Sleep allows our body to recover and repair itself and is essential to life.
It is recommended that people between the age of 12 -18 need between 8.5 and 10 hours sleep each night, and this included the weekends!!!
There is a big difference between the sleep you need to get by on and the amount you need to function effectively, and this will also depend on what activities you are doing each day.
Students here are extremely active throughout their waking hours and the sleep they need for their body and mind to function optimally need to reflect this. Just because they go to bed at 9pm does not automatically mean they are sleeping at this time.
I have spoken to some students this week who have been watching football games or playing computer games until 1.30 in the morning. They are coming to college deprived of sleep and expecting that their body will work they way it should! The quality of their sleep directly affects the quality of their waking life, including their mental sharpness, productivity, emotional balance, creativity and physical vitality.
Please monitor your childs sleep and ensure that they are getting enough to function at their best during the college day.
