Last Saturday saw the first of the IFS fundraising events and what better place to have it than Bunnings, West Gosford!
I hoped for sun but got rain and plenty of it. However, it did not deter us.

The Warm Up.
With plenty of players to help with the running of the day we set up early placing serviettes between 2 slices of bread and did so with about 50 loaves! 20kg of onions were chopped and 60kg of sausages were ready to be cooked.
Then we awaited the onslaught of DIY enthusiasts that would stop to buy a snag sanger (lingo I have picked up from the locals!)
We waited some more……..we waited a little longer…….and then it came. The onslaught arrived like a tidal wave and did not stop for the next four hours or so.
The First Half.
Volunteers came and went and up popped several of our students to help with the cooking and serving. Attack was our best form of defence and we put plenty of crosses in to the box that were headed home by the money taker.
The rain continued but the crowed kept coming. At one point I think I counted a team of 19 IFS students, parents and their friends outside the tent all buying a sausage sizzle. I’m not sure this was in the rule book but it made for an impressive display on the sideline and the support sure was appreciated. It lifted the spirit of the team and onwards we pushed past the average midfield and up into attack.
Rodney took one for the team and spent the rest of the first half tucking in behind the midfield to produce a truly magnificent display of sausage turning on the grill.
Half Time
At half time I had to leave the team to their own devises as I popped to Coles for a few more supplies of onion and bread but made it back in time for the second half. The team were in control at this point and showed no sign of fatigue or slowing down.
Second Half
It began to slow in the second half as we began to run out of sausages. But there were plenty of tricks on display as we continued to juggle the cooking and serve perfect volleys with money flying in and happy customers flying out.
With the game drawing to a close there was no chance that IFS would not come out on top. The rain eased and the crowd dispersed and by 3.15pm we were certain of a win, it came right in the last minute with a young man taking a shot at the last snag and taking it down sauce as well.
We battled the elements and put on a clean display of skill and determination-the coaches would be proud.
So, a 60-0 snag win for the IFS team putting us $1100 clear at the top of the league. Be sure to tune in to the next round when we take on the ‘Mighty Public’ in the Fundraising Cup League.
After match interview with Sally
“We were all over it from the start. We had all the ingredients of a solid team and were supported all the way. There were a few moments of unsteadiness as the public tried to hack our defence but we stayed strong and they could not make a break for it. All in all I am proud of the team and to be top of the league at this stage is a fantastic achievement. Next time we will need to make sure we have a few more sausages up our sleeves so we can go hard until full-time. A good clean win was what we were hoping for but we smashed them and you’ve got to be happy with that.”
righto sport, you’re doing the match summaries from now..
