Hi All,
While the students are here for the number one game in the world, we decided to look at what are some of the games around the world. What games do people play in say a village in Sri Lanka where they cannot walk into a shop and buy a ball or bat etc. One particular game we found is called Gilli-Danda. Class 5/6 have been in the process of learning about this game, what is needed to play and the rules. And in doing so have realised that perhaps some of the best games we play don’t need any or very little equipment.
In doing these games around the world we look into Procedural Text, Mathematics, History and PDHPE. It has been really interesting at looking at other games and learning that some games we play in Australia have actually come from other parts of the world. We have also started to look at the Ancient Olympic games and how they played and still play a part in our everyday life. For example Pausanias noted that for about half a century the only event at the ancient Greek Olympic festival was the race that comprised one length of the stade at Olympia, where the word “stadium” originated.
Regards,
Shane
