I was proud to be there on the historic day of IFS’ first public game as a college.
On Wednesday 20th February 2013, our ‘eldest’ group took on the Valentine Phoenix U17s in Newcastle, who proved to be the perfect level for our boys to be greatly challenged and yet gain a lot of confidence from the test.
It was a wonderful chance to create a stronger unit as a team whilst beginning to measure individual progress from our initial training block.
Our focus in the first 3 weeks has been working on our Build Up through improving positioning, movement and technique. It was pleasing to see the players execute these actions many times, building up over halfway to eventuate into creating some good goal scoring opportunities. We were unlucky not to convert more chances but were rewarded with a fortunate penalty in which Oscar stepped up to score the first ever goal in IFS history.
The game unfortunately had to be cut short due to a bad injury to a Valentine player. As the heavens kept turning the taps on and off, the players were not deterred from their task and we were getting better as the game went on. Even though the final result was 4-1 to the opposition, it was with a winning feeling the boys applauded each other on their performance and first game as a team of 3 weeks old.
Not only was the performance pleasing, but the attitude and effort was honorable. We want to establish a culture of positivity and encouragement amongst ourselves whilst playing hard, fair and respectful football against the opposition.
There’s nothing like a game to bring all the aspects together and reward the players for their hard work at training. Thanks to the family and friends who came to support us. This is the first of many games to come. May the winning feeling remain. Cheers to IFS!
