This week the students in stage 5 (years 9 and 10) have been given an English and History project. This DIY style project based learning educational pack will allow students the opportunity to show us their true potential, for some this was a shock to the system, while others have effortlessly taken it in their stride.
Taking a step back and observing the students has been an interesting and worth while task; it is evident which students can be left to their own devices and are conscientious and which need additional support to complete the set tasks.
Time management is an essential tool required by all our pupils, if deadlines are missed then there are a set of clear consequences. As in the real world a degree of planning and organisational skills are needed to ensure work is complete to a high standard and on time. Most have adapted well this week and are progressing through the individual and group activities.
Students were also given the opportunity for some direct input into the design and set up of our open learning space which, it is important for pupils to take ownership of this space. The high college will be constantly evolving as our number increase and iPads distributed.
Let us not forget that we have now been officially running as a college for nineteen days! I am still constantly being reminded that what we achieve each day may be more than others do in a week.
Personally I am delighted to be back in the classroom, this is my sixth year teaching and by far the biggest challenge of my career to date. Working at IFS is allowing me to inspire pupils, gain job satisfaction daily and of course help in shaping our future generations.
