Every child is born with an innate sense of curiosity. Why do we get butterflies in our stomachs before a big game? What makes a ball curve in mid-air? How do our muscles have a memory? Yet, as most children progress through traditional schooling, this inquisitiveness often takes a backseat to rote learning, standardised testing, and rigid classroom structures.
People often ask us why a sports school cares so deeply about fostering this trait. At Central Coast Sports College (CCSC), we recognise that the most successful and adaptable adults never stop asking questions. Curiosity is an asset that we nurture to prepare our young people for a rapidly changing world.
The science behind the spark
Recent Australian research firmly supports the value of an inquisitive mind. A 2024 report by the Australian Council for Educational Research, analysing global PISA data, revealed a direct link between high levels of student curiosity and better academic performance, particularly in mathematics. The study highlighted that curious students are not only better problem solvers, but they also display a higher tolerance for uncertainty, anxiety, and stress.
Researchers from Griffith University found that when a child’s curiosity deepens, their drive shifts from seeking external rewards to genuine intrinsic motivation. They begin to independently ask questions and seek answers, creating a lifelong cycle of learning. Cultivating this kind of deep thinking is essential to help the next generation navigate the complex global challenges of the future.
Challenging the status quo
This research aligns with the core values of our sports school. Our Founder and CEO, Paul Chapman, built this college on the belief that education needs to challenge the traditional delivery model. Inspired by bold educational thinkers, Paul rejects the conventional “carrot-and-stick” approach to learning. He knows that student athletes achieve far more when they’re driven by intrinsic motivation, sparked by genuine curiosity, self-belief, and a clear sense of purpose.
Instead of fitting student athletes into a predetermined academic mould, at CCSC, we start with the end in mind. We ask our student athletes: What are you passionate about? Where do you want to go? By giving them the wheel, their natural curiosity drives their education.
The power of the multi-passionate learner
Traditional schooling often implies that a student must fit a single label: they must be either an athlete or a mathematician, a designer or a scientist.
Our non-ATAR pathways and Big Picture Learning model reject that notion entirely. We celebrate the multi-passionate individual, and we give them the tools to explore their diverse interests in the real world. A major part of this is our Learning Through Interests/Internship (LTI) program. As part of a senior student athlete’s personalised learning plan, they spend at least one day a week in a workplace matched to their passions. This process connects project-based academic goals with practical, hands-on mentorship from industry professionals, ensuring they build genuine workplace skills before they even graduate.
Creating the right schooling environment
Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions a parent can make. It means looking beyond standard testing metrics and finding an environment that truly fits the individual child. CCSC offers a unique college environment rather than a traditional, rigid school setting. This means there’s mutual respect between our dedicated staff and our student athletes, fostering a safe atmosphere where young people feel confident to ask questions, take risks, and be curious.
Our holistic approach is built on a foundation of connection, wellbeing, and an active lifestyle. Whether our young student athletes are engaging in our exploratory Pre-Kindy Play Program, moving in the Performance Lab, or undertaking hands-on work experience in LTI, the goal remains the same: to keep the spark of curiosity alive.
Experience learning without limits
Curiosity is the ultimate catalyst for innovation, resilience, and personal growth. By valuing individuality and celebrating passion, we empower our student athletes to turn their inquisitive nature into lifelong success. They graduate as capable, adaptable, and independent thinkers ready to face the world with confidence and a hunger for knowledge.
