Wellbeing begins with daily choices that fuel the body, focus the mind, and support recovery. At Central Coast Sports College (CCSC), we’re committed to blending education and sport so our student athletes learn how to care for their bodies and minds, set personal goals, and enjoy being active.
Nutrition that supports everyday wellbeing
Good nutrition helps to sustain energy levels, sharpen focus, improve mood, and fast-track recovery. We guide student athletes to make simple, sustainable choices that fit their needs and goals, including:
- Eating balanced meals with lean protein, whole grains, healthy fats, and colourful fruit and vegetables.
- Choosing low-glycemic snacks such as yoghurt, fresh fruit, nuts, and wholegrain crackers for consistent energy.
- Drinking water regularly and recognising early signs of dehydration.
- Timing meals and snacks to support the day, starting with a nourishing breakfast and refuelling before and after training or games.
Our college café offers fresh salads, fruit, sandwiches, yoghurts and wholesome daily specials prepared by qualified chefs. Additionally, our college nutritionist is available for personalised guidance based on sport, training load, preferences, and dietary requirements.
Balanced routines for improved learning and development
At CCSC, we design timetables to support a balanced routine of movement, learning and recovery:
- Mornings start with movement and sports training, so breakfast and pre-training fuel are planned in.
- Lunch is a 40-minute break to refuel at the café, enjoy active recovery on the field, and reset for the afternoon.
- Afternoon classes include movement breaks – a chance to hydrate and enjoy a light snack.
- Evenings at home are for recovery routines and sleep planning to sustain energy for the next day.
Recovery rituals for the mind and body
Rest and recovery are essential parts of progress and enjoyment in sport and movement. We teach simple practices that help our student athletes feel and perform at their best, such as:
- Promoting quality sleep: We encourage student athletes to aim for at least eight hours of sleep each night and adopt a calm, screen-free wind-down routine at least one hour before bed.
- Listening to the body: Student athletes learn to recognise fatigue, muscle soreness, and mood changes as early indicators that the body needs to rest and recover.
- Preventing injury: By educating student athletes on effective warm-up and cool-down routines, we help them to reduce their risk of injury and maximise their training outcomes and time spent on the field.
Strength and conditioning sessions are built into every student athlete’s weekly schedule. Our approach draws on Foundation, Talent, Elite, Mastery (FTEM) and Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) principles in an age-appropriate, ability-friendly way.
In the rare event of an injury, our staff provide a safe, personalised rehabilitation program. Our coaches and mentors check in on wellbeing during rehabilitation and celebrate milestones along the way.
Nurturing confidence through participation
Student athletes lead food and wellbeing initiatives that serve the college community, sourcing ingredients from the garden, helping prepare nutritious meals for the café, and building life skills around planning, cooking and teamwork. With guidance from experienced coaches and teachers, our student athletes develop healthy routines, a balanced relationship with movement and food, and the confidence to pursue their goals while taking care of themselves.
