Choosing where to send your child in year 7 can be a difficult, daunting and emotional decision. You might have a few high schools in mind, including your local government school. You might be weighing up considerations like proximity to home, where your child’s friends are going, and what the school stands for or specialises in.
We believe school shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all environment where students are mostly confined to desks and a set curriculum. Instead, it should align with your family’s values and your child’s unique spark; it should be an environment that puts them in charge of their learning and allows them to move, play, and follow their interests while building a well-rounded education. Crucially, we believe your child’s access to the best learning opportunities should be defined by their potential and passions, not by the school zone you happen to live in.
But how do you know if Central Coast Sports College (CCSC) is the right fit for your family? If you’re currently looking at options for your child, particularly those heading into Year 7 in the next year or two, here’s what we look for and how you can prepare.
What does it mean to be a ‘student athlete’?
At CCSC, we use the term student athlete intentionally, but it’s often misunderstood as a label reserved only for elite sportspeople or those destined for professional contracts. While we certainly have student athletes performing at national and international levels, the term athlete defines a commitment to the process, valuing effort and personal growth over winning. We look for children who:
- have a passion for developing into the best version of themselves.
- are coachable and willing to improve.
- value the healthy body, healthy mind connection.
What attributes do we look for in an application?
The ideal CCSC student athlete isn’t just the one who scores the most goals or has the fastest sprint. While athletic passion drives our student athletes, the attributes we value most are curiosity, independence, and resilience. We value:
- The Independent Thinker: Student athletes who don’t just wait for instructions but are eager to drive their own learning.
- The Multi-Passionate Individual: We celebrate the child who wants to be both a professional athlete and a future entrepreneur, scientist, or artist. We reject the idea that you have to choose one.
- The Niche Explorer: We appreciate student athletes who pursue unique passions, whether they’re fascinated by robotics and AI, exploring space engineering, or diving deep into sports psychology or user experience design. We provide the flexibility for these interests to thrive alongside their training.
As for families, we attract parents who value a collaborative partnership. You’ll be supportive of a child centered approach and see the value in Big Picture Learning, non-ATAR pathways, and real-world projects over traditional standardised testing.
3 tips to prepare a strong application
Before you apply, we encourage you to review our educational approach and life at CCSC. Understanding how we teach can help you determine if our environment will help your child flourish. It will also provide a guide to what we’re looking for and help you to put forward a strong application.
Our enrolment process isn’t first-come, first-served. Instead, we look for the right fit for each year group’s dynamic. To stand out, we recommend these three tips:
1. Focus on the why
In your application, don’t just list your child’s sporting or academic achievements. Tell us about your child’s drive. What makes them curious? How do they handle not winning or a challenge in the classroom?
2. Provide detailed reference(s)
Think of this as a personality profile. A letter from a coach or community leader that speaks to your child’s commitment, coachability, and leadership tells us more than simply stating that your child’s on a sporting team.
3. Highlight innovation
If your child has a unique hobby or a self-driven project, please share it! We value student athletes who think outside the box.
Thinking ahead: The year 7 transition
If your child is currently in Year 5 or Year 6, now is the critical time to start thinking about their high school journey. The jump to Year 7 is a major milestone, and at CCSC, we see it as the perfect moment to level up both academically and athletically.
Right now, we’re particularly keen on applications from families of budding basketball and netball players. Our programs in these sports are designed to both improve skills and act as pathways to representative levels through our partnerships with organisations like Central Coast Heart. If your child is constantly shooting hoops in the driveway or looking for the next netball clinic, they may find their tribe here in Year 7.
