As the Founder and CEO of Central Coast Sports College (CCSC), Paul Chapman has shown extraordinary leadership. In our latest article, we share how he’s challenged the traditional delivery of education to build the Central Coast’s fastest-growing school.
Reimagining education on the Central Coast
Like many parents, as a father of three, Paul experienced the long days, late nights, and demanding schedules that come with children’s sporting commitments.
While the opportunities were invaluable, it took a toll: fatigue, limited family time, and inconsistent coaching quality. He envisioned a better way, where high-quality sports training and education could be integrated into a school’s daily curriculum.
Paul’s vision was deeply influenced by his early life. Growing up in Canada, he was accustomed to a culture that embraced and celebrated new ideas and success. When he moved to Australia at age eight, he noticed a cultural difference: a tendency to diminish those who excelled.
A pivotal moment in Paul’s youth came as a teenager when he and his school group participated in Clean Up Australia Day, clearing rubbish from the roadside and waterways. Working as a team to support the community gave him a sense of shared purpose and pride. While he didn’t know it at the time, the experience ignited a lifelong passion for service, teamwork, and community – values that would later form the heart of Central Coast Sport College (CCSC’s) culture.
After finishing high school, Paul was drawn to a career in the IT industry. After working in this space for 12 years, he returned to tertiary study, studying a Bachelor of Education, Majoring in Computer Studies, at the University of Newcastle. Paul graduated with First Class Honours, and was awarded the University Medal – a special recognition for students who demonstrate exceptional achievement throughout their studies.
In 2013, after teaching in a local K-12 independent school for several years, Paul set out to realise his vision: a sports college that uniquely integrated high-level sports training and real-world experiences guided by professionals. This new education model would change the way young people balance sport, education, and extracurricular activities, empowering them to excel in all areas. Initially known as the International Football School before rebranding to Central Coast Sports College in 2018, the college made waves with its comprehensive and innovative approach to sporting and academic excellence.
Inspired by bold thinkers
Paul’s teaching career showed him the powerful, lasting influence a trusted adult can have on a young person’s life. A teacher, coach or mentor who believes in them, challenges them, and builds their confidence can inspire change that spans far beyond college. Influenced by educational thinker Alfie Kohn and technology visionaries Steve Jobs and Elon Musk, Paul has built his career on bold ideas and a willingness to challenge the status quo. He rejects the carrot-and-stick approach, believing instead that student athletes achieve more through intrinsic motivation — driven by curiosity, self-belief and a clear sense of purpose.
Under Paul’s leadership, CCSC has become an environment where student athletes are empowered to take charge of their learning and work towards their dreams.
A vision realised
Today, CCSC is the realisation of Paul’s vision — a place where sport and learning work in harmony, where student athletes are encouraged to forge their path, follow their passions, and celebrate success together. Paul’s journey shows that with the courage to challenge convention, a commitment to serving others, and the conviction to stay true to one’s beliefs, anything is possible.
