In Week 7 a small group of our Stage 4 students attended an excursion to The Lounge Room in Gosford. There were plenty of groans when they heard it was a poetry excursion… however by the end of the day I can proudly say they were blown away! The full day excursion gave students the opportunity to work with industry professionals (poets and musicians) to further explore their creative thoughts and personalities. The workshop was run by Will Small and his crew at MMAD (Musicians Making a Difference), a not-for-profit organisation which uses music, poetry and the creative arts to empower youth. Will provided the students with a range of experiences including a series of writing exercises (incorporating art and music to prompt the students), the opportunity to get up on stage and perform their written words, and even provided the students with live performances from himself and his crew. But it was definitely the second half of the day which stole the show! Will provided the students with the chance to jump into a fully equipped recording studio and experience what it’s like to work like the professionals! The students rocked the mic in the soundproof booth with utter confidence and knocked it out of the park.
The day was fantastic. Students explored the power of the written and spoken word enthusiastically, they courageously shared their own voices, ideas and stories and mindfully listened to those of others. Overall, it was definitely a proud moment to see CCSC students demonstrate the utmost passion, respect and drive – they couldn’t have represented our college better!”
