In our learning we are driven by the 4C’s – Critical Thinking, Communication, Creativity and Collaboration. These elements are fundamental to how we think, what we do and how we do it. This week, Year 9 have immersed themselves in the world of current affairs and have spent time investigating some of the problems that we, as members of this world, face today.
In order to get to grips with this real-world project, Year 9 have ‘become’ the UN; each student the leader of a United Nations member state, responsible for looking into contentious issues prevalent in today’s society. Now, typically Year 9 like to talk over one another and then keep talking! In order to develop our communication skills and debate in a ‘fair and tolerant’ manner, we have created our own UN conference in the classroom. We are becoming masters in the art of negotiation and respectful opposition.
All students have risen to the challenge with impressive results. Learning about the United Nations, discussing important issues in an orderly fashion and understanding that significant differences exist between nations, have all been on the agenda. Watching the increase in student’s awareness of others – the large number of global citizens who live in poverty, amidst civil war, in despair and persecuted because of their race or religion – was exceptional. This week has taught us all about the importance of ‘Compassion’ – being caring towards others regardless of where they are from, having empathy for those less fortunate, showing kindness to those in need. Indeed ‘Compassion’ is a wonderful trait to have. Perhaps it is the 5th C we ought to bring into today’s classroom?

How true. What a great idea – it’s a shame compassion isn’t inherent though, and needs to be taught.
